The Talbot Street Art Fair 2018, the oldest juried art fair in Indiana, will be held June 16 and 17, 2018 in the Herron Morton Neighborhood, Indianapolis, Indiana, between 16th and 20th Streets and between Delaware and Pennsylvania. Admission is free to the event that will be held regardless of the weather from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Artists at Talbot Street Art Fair
This year over 250 artists from across the United States will take part in this juried art fair. Exhibits will include traditional art forms like photography, clay, and sculpture, but will also feature 2D and 3D, mixed media, jewelry, fiber, and metalwork. The Talbot Street Art Fair exhibitors will be present during the hours of the fair. All the work will be original with nothing commercially manufactured or kits.
Judging will begin on Saturday morning. The Talbot Street Art Fair awards monetary prizes totaling $11,000, all of which goes entirely to the artists.
Talbot Street Parking Availability
There is a lot of on-street parking available near the event, plus six different lots hosted by the Boy Scout Troop 269, and the Knights of Columbus are also sponsoring a parking area. There are charges for these lots. For a free-will donation, you can also take advantage of the Pedal and Park. Herron High School will take care of your vehicle while you bike to and from the event. There is handicapped parking in designated areas.
This Indianapolis Art Fair Amenities
What would a fair be without food? There are planned vendor areas on either end and in the center of the fair area. There are picnic tables in the food court in the center of all the action. Portable restrooms will be conveniently placed throughout the area.
Art Association of Indianapolis
The Art Association of Indianapolis was founded in 1883 by a group of benefactors interested in sending a group of artists to study in Europe. One of the founding members was May Wright Sewell, a suffragette and civic activist. In 1900 John Herron donated the funds to purchase the T. C. Steele Studio located at 16th and Pennsylvania. Later a museum was built and in the late 1920s, an art school was established. Over the decades, the buildings were renovated and enlarged.
In 1956, on Mother’s Day weekend, the first Talbot Street Art Fair was held with 15 exhibitors and about 1,500 attendees.
Areas of Interest near the Art Institute
The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park (“100 Acres”) turned a gravel pit into a diverse ecosystem with walking trails that lead guests to views of contemporary artworks.
Oldfields is an estate and grounds originally built from 1910 to 1913 and renovated in the 30s and 40s. The 22-room mansion sits on 26 acres and was restored in the late 20th Century to its glory of the pre-World War II era.
South of the Art Museum is Westerley House situated in the Golden Hill area. Built in 1922, it is a four-story, 20-room home, complete with carriage house, greenhouse and landscaped gardens. Initially, it housed a fine art collection which was the basis for the Museum’s early European collection.
The Miller House, its gardens and many original furnishings, located in Columbus, Indiana, was designed by Eero Sarrinen with Kevin Roche as his associate. The mid-Twentieth Century home is a national historic landmark and reflects the interior design of Alexander Girard and landscape architect Dan Kiley.
